Tunezy: Behind the Scenes - Interns
At Tunezy, we don’t believe age should equate to the knowledge or impact one can bring. Some of the best ideas we’ve had since we started have been from our interns. They bring fresh, forward thinking ideas to the table that have had a strong impact in shaping what our platform has become.
This belief is fundamental to our culture for a couple reasons. First, as a start-up it’s necessary that everyone contributes beyond their years. My grey hairs are proof of this. Secondly, Derrick and I both came from co-op programs where we experienced the burn of not contributing much, and being given a set of “safe”, boring, and often meaningless tasks. We are determined to never let that happen at Tunezy.
I am happy to say our interns contributed in big ways over the last four months. They drove change in the product, developed strategy, and contacted businesses and Musicians from around the world.
Chris Lomond comes from the Waterloo/Laurier dual degree program in computer science and business. He didn’t know a thing about Ruby on rails when he joined, but is now confident he can build web apps on his own.
Kathleen Chan comes from the BBA program at the University of Toronto and led Musician partnerships throughout the semester. If you’re a musician and you’ve worked with Tunezy, you’ve probably met her!
Matien Kazemi also comes from the BBA program at UofT. In his time here he led strategy on Facebook, supported business development, and built up a local Musician contest that will be rolling out in September (stay tuned!)
As our current interns leave to go back to school for the Summer, we decided to have a fun “culminating project” in the form of a Dragon’s Den pitch. We asked our team - both developers and marketers - to put together a presentation for a brand new concept that will help spread Tunezy’s vision and drive user growth. The ask was to leverage what they’ve learned, and take their unique experiences to leave a lasting legacy on the company. Individuals would pitch for 5 minutes, be subject to a Q&A, and would finally be judged on the following: creativity, practicality, cost effectiveness, and presentation.
